Arizona Nurse Practioners Allowed To Perform Abortions

Posted: May 19, 2008 09:24 PM EDT

In an unanimous decision, the Arizona Board of Nursing found nurse practitioners can perform abortions.  But a bill that is waiting approval from the Senate and the Governor could over-turn the board's decision.

Back in June 2007, an anonymous complaint was made against a Planned Parenthood nurse practitioner.  Nurse practitioners have a masters degree, but have seven years less experience than a doctor.

Its been the center of controversy for many years and its one with no shortage of opinions.

Now, the Arizona Senate is considering a bill that would prohibit nurse practioners from performing abortions.  At Arizona Planned Parenthood, nurse practioners have been performing abortions for the past five years.

Bryan Howard, Vice-president and CEO Arizona Planned Parenthood says, "As the Board of Nurses determined, there are no risks associated with a nurse practitioner providing this care compared to when a physician is providing this care."

Not everyone agrees with Planned Parenthood's policy.  Apryl Brand, a registered nurse for 25 years, believes Planned Parenthood is trained to promote abortion.

There are some limitations as to what procedures a nurse practioner can perform.  If the woman is more than 13-weeks pregnant, a doctor must perform the procedure.

There is also controversy about pre-abortion education.  Do the nurses have enough time to properly inform women on the risks and complications associated with the procedure?  Some say no.

"They don't always educate the females the way they should."

"The young woman I talked to said they were understaffed that day and couldn't talk with them about it.  They were happy to make them an appointment for an abortion but not to counsel them."

The CEO of Arizona's Planned Parenthood chapter says that's just not the case.  "The reality is that nurse practitioners provide a kind of health care that patients are very happy with.  It's very patient focused, a lot of education, a lot of time with the professional."

Planned Parenthood says allowing nurse practitioners to perform abortions is necessary for another reason.  They say there's a doctor shortage.  Without nurse practioners performing abortions, Planned Parenthood says women would have to wait too long for the procedure.
