WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Archbishop Joseph F. Naumann, whose Roman Catholic archdiocese covers northeast Kansas, on May 9 called on Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius to stop taking Communion until she disowns her support for the "serious moral evil" of abortion. That put the church in conflict with a rising star of the Democratic Party, often described as a "moderate" and perhaps the leading prospect to become Barack Obama's vice presidential running mate.
Naumann also took Sebelius to task for her veto April 21 of a bill, passed two to one by both houses of the Kansas Legislature, which would strengthen the state's ban on late-term abortions by authorizing private lawsuits against providers. That followed by a year her veto of a bill requiring explicit medical reasons for a late abortion, which was preceded by vetoing other abortion legislation in 2006, 2005 and 2003.
Those positions are necessary for Democratic politicians to pass their party's pro-choice litmus test, but Sebelius' connection with abortion is more intimate. She is allied with the aggressive Kansas branch of Planned Parenthood in a bitter struggle with anti-abortion activist District Attorney Phill Kline.

I live in Kansas, which is reputed to be a more conservative and Christian state than many, and so I have always found it curious — and stomach-turning — that George Tiller, a late-term abortion profiteer, can have such a lucrative practice in Wichita. Even when the state’s legislature and governor’s office were held by professing Christian Republicans, and the same could be said of the Wichita mayor’s office, Tiller expanded his practice with ease. Not only did prominent officials not speak out against Tiller, they failed to enforce already lenient abortion laws, as an investigation by a former Kansas Attorney General, Phill Kline, has begun to make clear.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) -- Legislative debates about abortion generate plenty of noise and attention, but what happens in courtrooms is likely to matter more.
The Legislature's annual hearings and votes on the issue have become the political equivalent of shows from touring companies for "Cats" or "Oklahoma!" However differently they're staged, the ending remains the same -- a veto by Gov. Kathleen Sebelius.
Meanwhile, prosecutors, judges, regulators and jurors probably will have more effect on how clinics operate and whether they stay open. Two criminal cases against abortion providers are pending, and abortion opponents have forced two grand juries to begin their own investigations.
Over the past decade, both sides have come to see enforcement of existing laws as perhaps the most pressing issue with abortion in Kansas.
"The real issue is, does the current law work, and if it doesn't work, why doesn't it work?" said Sen. Phil Journey, an anti-abortion Haysville Republican. Read More...

BY PHILL KLINEAbuse almost always occurs behind a veil of secrecy. Such was the case with the Kaufman house in Newton, until the Attorney General's Office convened a task force that led to the subpoena of medical records that revealed sexual exploitation of mentally challenged patients.
Medical records exposed the truth, and Arlan Kaufman is now in prison.
A similar story happened in Wichita as a man repeatedly raped his stepdaughters through several pregnancies and abortions. On one occasion, however, he took one pregnant victim to an adoption agency, which didn't believe that a boyfriend got his stepdaughter pregnant. The agency called police, medical records were obtained, and the stepfather is now in prison.
Kansas cannot protect victims of abuse unless names are provided to investigators. State law makes reports on child sexual abuse mandatory, and when I was attorney general, I sought the names of children who received abortions -- specifically so we could protect them.

The article "Clinic must release abortion data" (Nation, Thursday), which details a Kansas grand jury's investigation of illegal late-term abortions, exposes the fact that abortion remains one of the most unregulated and unaccountable medical procedures in the country.
As a result of secrecy and lack of accountability, our pets likely are safer at the veterinarian's office than women are at some abortion clinics.
Occasionally, an intrepid government official, acting on a tip by a patient or employee, breaks through the stone wall of secrecy and uncovers abuses. A Planned Parenthood abortion clinic in Johnson County, Kan., is facing 107 criminal counts based on a confidential review of just 29 patient records.

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- A new study published in this month's Journal of Reproductive Medicine finds abortion linked with premature births and cerebral palsy.
Physicians in Canada and the U.S. teamed up for the study and examined data from more than four million births.
Dr. Byron Calhoun, Professor and Vice Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology at West Virginia University, estimates that roughly a third of babies who are considered "very pre-term" result from a woman's decision to have a prior abortion.
Babies who spend less than 32 weeks in the womb almost certainly suffer from very-low-birth-weight, the study found. The researchers estimated that, of the 32 percent of babies who suffer from very-low-birth-weight, eight percent develop cerebral palsy.
Tony Perkins, the president of the Family Research Council, commented on the results.
