Planned Parenthood Timeline

Planned Parenthood

1916: Margaret Sanger opens America's first birth control clinic, in Brooklyn, N.Y., at a time when contraceptive information and materials are illegal on grounds of obscenity. Today's Planned Parenthood traces its roots to that clinic.

1948: Planned Parenthood awards a grant to research biologist Gregory Pincus to investigate the contraceptive value of steroids. His work leads to the development of the birth-control pill, which is approved by the FDA in 1960.

1965: The U.S. Supreme Court strikes down state laws banning the use of contraceptives by married couples in a case instigated by Planned Parenthood.

1970: After a handful of states legalize abortion, Planned Parenthood of Syracuse N.Y. begins offering abortion services.

1971: Planned Parenthood establishes an international family planning arm, which remains active today as a $7 million program working in nearly two dozen countries, including India, Sudan, Guatemala and Peru.

1973: On January 22, the U.S. Supreme Court legalizes abortion with Roe v. Wade. More Planned parenthood affiliates begin offering abortion.

1976: In a case involving a Planned Parenthood affiliate in Missouri, the U.S. Supreme Court strikes down state requirements that a woman get her spouse's consent before an abortion.

1986: Planned Parenthood clinics in several states are targeted with bombs and arson fires as anti-abortion violence flares.

1989: Planned Parenthood establishes the Planned Parenthood Action Fund, its political advocacy arm.

1992: The U.S. Supreme Court upholds some state restrictions on abortion, including a 24-hour waiting period and parental consent for minors. Planned Parenthood had challenged those laws in Pennsylvania.

1994: Capping years of escalating violence, an abortion opponent storms two Massachusetts clinics – one of them a Planned Parenthood facility – and fatally shoots the two receptionists.

1999: Planned Parenthood launches www.teenwire.com, a Web site that aims to provide frank, medically accurate information about sex, contraception and abortion. The site now receives 6 million visits a year.

2006: Planned Parenthood leads a successful ballot campaign to overturn a near-total ban on abortion passed by the South Dakota legislature. Another ban, with limited exceptions, will be back on the ballot in the state this fall.

2007: Planned Parenthood -- which now has 882 health centers across the country -- reports a record $1 billion in revenue.

2008: The Planned Parenthood Action Fund announces a $10 million campaign to engage voters about women's health issues for the fall election. The Action Fund recently launched its first initiatives opposing presumptive Republican nominee Sen. John McCain.
