Sonic images must be offered
New abortion rule applies in 90 days
BY JON CRAIG | JCRAIG@ENQUIRER.COM
COLUMBUS (Ohio)-
Medical clinics must offer to show pregnant women ultrasound images of their fetuses, if any are made, before carrying out abortions, under legislation signed Friday by Gov. Ted Strickland.

Physicians risk losing their license to practice medicine in Ohio if they fail to comply with the law, which takes effect in 90 days. The bill was sponsored by state Rep. Shannon Jones, a Republican from Springboro. A similar bill is proposed in the Kentucky General Assembly. But unlike Ohio's new law - in which a physician can have his license suspended or revoked for not complying - a Northern Kentucky lawmaker proposes fines of up to $100,000 for the first offense.

The Ohio director of a national abortion rights group called the ultrasound requirement unnecessary. Kellie Copeland, executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio, said her organization surveyed many clinics across Ohio and found they already offer ultrasounds as standard practice. "We made a decision not to oppose or support it," Copeland said Friday. "It's a bit silly and unnecessary to pass a law requiring clinics to do something that they already do."

Officials at Planned Parenthood of Southwest Ohio also have said it's standard procedure for their patients to view ultrasound images and ask questions.

Paula Westwood, executive director of Right to Life of Greater Cincinnati, called ultrasound "wonderful technology" that should be available for all mothers to see their baby. Ohio's law won't require women to view ultrasound images, or fine physicians who don't comply, as is the case in some states.

State Sen. Jack Westwood, a Kenton County Republican, introduced legislation in the Kentucky General Assembly that would require physicians to perform ultrasounds on women seeking abortions.
